We imagine the artist gently brushing away dust. We forget the violence. To create <i data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"130\">David<\/i>, Michelangelo had to strike the stone with a hammer. He had to break it. He had to reduce a massive block of expensive raw material into dust.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"7\"><b data-path-to-node=\"7\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Pain of Becoming<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">In your own life, you are not just the Sculptor. You are also the Marble. This is the <b data-path-to-node=\"7\" data-index-in-node=\"107\">Sculptor&#8217;s Paradox<\/b>:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"8\">\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8,0,0\">To improve, you must act as the <b data-path-to-node=\"8,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"32\">Sculptor<\/b> (Ruthless, Visionary).<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8,1,0\">But to be improved, you must endure as the <b data-path-to-node=\"8,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"43\">Marble<\/b> (The one being struck).<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"9\"><b data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Why Growth Hurts<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\">We want &#8220;Personal Growth&#8221; to feel like adding a coat of paint\u2014smooth, easy, additive. But true growth is <b data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"122\">Subtractive<\/b>. It is the removal of parts of you that you have carried for years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"10\">\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\">You chip away the &#8220;People Pleaser.&#8221; (It hurts to say No).<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\">You chip away the &#8220;Victim.&#8221; (It hurts to take responsibility).<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10,2,0\">You chip away the &#8220;Safety.&#8221; (It hurts to take a risk).<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"11\"><b data-path-to-node=\"11\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Protocol<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\">If you are comfortable, you are not growing; you are just aging. The flying chips are proof of progress. Do not fear the hammer.
