The market does not care how hard you work. The market only cares how much <b data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"210\">Value<\/b> you create and how much of that value you can <b data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"262\">Capture<\/b>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"9\">The Output Delusion<\/h3>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\">Most people think about their salary as a reward for their &#8220;Output.&#8221; They focus on being more efficient, faster, and busier.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"11\">\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11,0,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"11,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Error:<\/i> You are focusing on the <b data-path-to-node=\"11,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"35\">Supply<\/b> side of the equation.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11,1,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"11,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Reality:<\/i> Your income is determined by the <b data-path-to-node=\"11,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"46\">Scarcity<\/b> of your skill and the <b data-path-to-node=\"11,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"77\">Magnitude<\/b> of the problem you solve.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12\">If you are a commodity (easily replaced), your pay hike will always be capped by the &#8220;Standard Market Rate.&#8221; No amount of extra effort will change this.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"13\">The Three Levers of Pay<\/h3>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14\">To increase your income, you must stop &#8220;playing small&#8221; with your effort and start playing large with your <b data-path-to-node=\"14\" data-index-in-node=\"106\">Impact<\/b>.<\/p>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"15\"><b data-path-to-node=\"15\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">1. The Specificity of the Problem<\/b> Are you solving a &#8220;Maintenance&#8221; problem or a &#8220;Growth&#8221; problem?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"16\">\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16,0,0\">Maintenance (Keeping the lights on) is an expense. Organizations want to minimize expenses.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16,1,0\">Growth (Generating new revenue) is an investment. Organizations want to maximize investments.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16,2,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"16,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Protocol:<\/i> Pivot your work toward the &#8220;Revenue Center&#8221; of the business.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"17\"><b data-path-to-node=\"17\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">2. The Replaceability Factor<\/b> If your job can be described in a manual, it can be automated or outsourced. If you are doing what everyone else is doing, you have zero leverage in a negotiation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"18\">\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"18,0,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"18,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Protocol:<\/i> Build a &#8220;Personal Monopoly&#8221; by combining skills that rarely exist in the same person (e.g., Coding + Sales, or Design + Systems Thinking).<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"19\"><b data-path-to-node=\"19\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">3. The Leverage of Scale<\/b> Can your work be used by 10 people or 10,000?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"20\">\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"20,0,0\">A teacher in a classroom has low leverage. A teacher with a digital course has infinite leverage.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"20,1,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"20,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Protocol:<\/i> Look for ways to decouple your output from your time.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"21\">The Sovereign Mindset<\/h3>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"22\">Stop asking for a &#8220;Pay Hike.&#8221; Start presenting a <b data-path-to-node=\"22\" data-index-in-node=\"49\">Value Proposition<\/b>. Don&#8217;t say: <i data-path-to-node=\"22\" data-index-in-node=\"79\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve been here for a year and I&#8217;ve worked hard.&#8221;<\/i> Say: <i data-path-to-node=\"22\" data-index-in-node=\"134\">&#8220;In the last 12 months, I have built a system that reduced churn by 12%, which equates to $500k in saved revenue. I would like to adjust my compensation to reflect a portion of that captured value.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\r\n<p data-path-to-node=\"23\"><b data-path-to-node=\"23\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">#DhandheKaFunda:<\/b> <i data-path-to-node=\"23\" data-index-in-node=\"17\">Don&#8217;t ask the organization to &#8216;give&#8217; you more. Create so much value that they &#8216;cannot afford&#8217; to let you leave.
