Corporate HR loves spheres.<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"7\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7,0,0\">&#8220;He is good at coding, okay at speaking, and decent at teamwork.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\">But in the high-performance world, spheres are useless. You do not win by being &#8220;above average&#8221; at everything. You win by being <b data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"128\">Top 1%<\/b> at one thing, even if you are terrible at everything else.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\"><b data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Logic of the Spike<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\">Imagine a graph of skills.<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"10\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Mediocre:<\/b> Flat line across the middle. (Good at nothing, bad at nothing).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Sovereign:<\/b> A flat line at the bottom, with one massive vertical spike.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\"><b data-path-to-node=\"11\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Manager&#8217;s Trap<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\">The original post describes a manager comparing &#8220;Smith&#8221; (a specialist) to &#8220;Nick&#8221; (a compliant generalist).<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"12\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,0,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"12,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Manager:<\/i> &#8220;Smith is a genius at algorithms, but he refuses to work at 2 AM like Nick. I need to fix Smith.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,1,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"12,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Result:<\/i> You force Smith to conform. You dull his spike. Now you have a grumpy, mediocre Smith.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"13\"><b data-path-to-node=\"13\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Protocol: Ignore the Dents<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"13\">If you have a racehorse, do not teach it to climb trees. If you have a coder who writes 10x algorithms but hates meetings:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\" data-path-to-node=\"14\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"14,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Do not<\/b> send him to &#8220;Communication Training.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"14,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Do:<\/b> Hire a Project Manager to handle the meetings for him.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"15\"><b data-path-to-node=\"15\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Build Around the Superpower<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"15\">Great teams are not collections of &#8220;Well-Rounded&#8221; individuals. Great teams are collections of <b data-path-to-node=\"15\" data-index-in-node=\"122\">Spiky Individuals<\/b> who interlock like puzzle pieces.<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"16\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16,0,0\">Person A is all Vision (and zero details).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16,1,0\">Person B is all Details (and zero vision). Together, they form a perfect circle. Apart, they are disasters.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"17\"><b data-path-to-node=\"17\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">#DhandheKaFunda:<\/b> <i data-path-to-node=\"17\" data-index-in-node=\"17\">Don&#8217;t try to be well-rounded.
