Fear fills the vacuum.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\"><b data-path-to-node=\"11\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The &#8220;Crime&#8221; of Silence<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\">The original post called non-communication a &#8220;Crime.&#8221; This is accurate. When you accept money (or a salary), you are selling two things:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\" data-path-to-node=\"12\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Result<\/b> (The code, the report, the product).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Certainty<\/b> (The feeling that things are under control).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"13\">If you deliver the Result but fail to deliver the Certainty, you have failed 50% of the job. &#8220;Surprising&#8221; your boss with a delay at the deadline is professional malpractice.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14\"><b data-path-to-node=\"14\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Protocol: The Heartbeat<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14\">To kill the fear, you must establish a &#8220;Heartbeat.&#8221; A Heartbeat is a regular, predictable signal that says: <i data-path-to-node=\"14\" data-index-in-node=\"136\">&#8220;I am here. The system is running.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"15\"><b data-path-to-node=\"15\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">1. The &#8220;No News is News&#8221; Rule<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"15\">Even if nothing has changed, <b data-path-to-node=\"15\" data-index-in-node=\"59\">send the update.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"16\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16,0,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"16,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">&#8220;Hi [Name], no major updates today. Still processing the data. Will have the report by Friday.&#8221;<\/i> This 10-second email buys you 3 days of trust.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"17\"><b data-path-to-node=\"17\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">2. The Bad News Broadcast<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"17\">Bad news must travel faster than good news.<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"18\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"18,0,0\">If you are going to miss a deadline, tell them <b data-path-to-node=\"18,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"47\">today<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"18,1,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"18,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Bad:<\/i> Telling them on Friday (the due date). Result: Anger.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"18,2,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"18,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Good:<\/i> Telling them on Tuesday. Result: Problem Solving.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"18,3,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"18,3,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Script:<\/i> &#8220;I see a risk to the Friday deadline because of X. I am mitigating it by Y. I will update you in 24 hours.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"19\"><b data-path-to-node=\"19\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">3. Over-Communication is Impossible<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"19\">I have never heard a client say: <i data-path-to-node=\"19\" data-index-in-node=\"69\">&#8220;Please stop telling me that my project is on track.&#8221;<\/i> People crave certainty. Give it to them.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"20\"><b data-path-to-node=\"20\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">#DhandheKaFunda:<\/b> <i data-path-to-node=\"20\" data-index-in-node=\"17\">Trust is not built on results alone.
