You cannot be both.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\"><b data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Anatomy of &#8220;Being Right&#8221; (The Battle)<\/b><\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"9\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9,0,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"9,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Goal:<\/i> Validation. To prove that your logic was sound, your data was correct, and the other person is an idiot.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9,1,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"9,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Cost:<\/i> You humiliate your colleague. You delay the project to argue a minor point. You burn social capital.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9,2,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"9,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Prize:<\/i> You get to say, &#8220;I told you so.&#8221; (This prize is worthless).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\"><b data-path-to-node=\"10\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Anatomy of &#8220;Being Effective&#8221; (The War)<\/b><\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"11\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11,0,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"11,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Goal:<\/i> The Outcome. To ship the product, close the deal, or fix the bug.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11,1,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"11,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Cost:<\/i> You might have to let a bad idea pass (temporarily). You might have to apologize when you weren&#8217;t wrong. You have to swallow your pride.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11,2,0\"><i data-path-to-node=\"11,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Prize:<\/i> You win.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Executive&#8217;s Razor<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"12\">When you feel the heat of an argument rising, pause and apply the Razor: <i data-path-to-node=\"12\" data-index-in-node=\"95\">&#8220;Does winning this specific argument move the needle on the 12-month goal?&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"13\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"13,0,0\">If <b data-path-to-node=\"13,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"3\">Yes<\/b>: Fight to the death. (This is rare).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"13,1,0\">If <b data-path-to-node=\"13,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"3\">No<\/b>: Concede immediately.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14\"><b data-path-to-node=\"14\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Jiu-Jitsu of Concession<\/b><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14\">The most powerful move in a meeting is to say: <i data-path-to-node=\"14\" data-index-in-node=\"75\">&#8220;You know what? You might be right. Let&#8217;s try it your way.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\" data-path-to-node=\"15\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"15,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"15,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">If they are right:<\/b> The problem is solved. You win.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"15,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"15,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">If they are wrong:<\/b> They will fail quickly and learn a lesson without you having to be the &#8220;bad guy.&#8221; You still win (long term).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16\"><b data-path-to-node=\"16\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">#DhandheKaFunda:<\/b> <i data-path-to-node=\"16\" data-index-in-node=\"17\">You can be the smartest person in the room, or the richest.
